Fantastic try scoring for the Lions from Big James 7, Mal Obe 4, Jack Staines 2, McMc Obe 1, Scott Sciara 1, Ollie Staines 1, and Samuel Gunkel 1, and for the Tigers from Joe Sharp 6, Matt Lawton 4, Conor McEvity 3, Archie Stella 3, Kenny Campbell 2, and Cameron Manning 1.
Cheshunt U9’s squad seemed keen and eager for their match in warm up training, and they looked on form. Hemel looked disciplined and tight in their warm up and it looked like it was going to be a close run game. Letchworth looked lively and the triangular was set to begin with Joe Crump and Freddie Brown being excellent sportsmen and playing for Letchworth to make up their second team. TheCheshuntsquad was split into two teams A and B and the games began. CheshuntA was first up against Hemel A and they started of slowly letting Hemel take the lead. This seemed to wake the boys up and some strong tackling from Samuel Gunkel 5 metres from the line lead to a turnover and Joe Sharp to run the length of the pitch and score. The well drilled team showed how well they can tackle and keep hold of the ball, which resulted in Mal Obe scoring and leaving us 10-5 up at half time. In the second half we made three substitutions and the new legs carried on the good work tackling any Hemel player with the ball, with the final whistle coming and a 10-5 win toCheshunt. Cheshunt B team played Letchworth A first and within minutes Conor McEvity was over the line a good end result to some fluid passing and good support. The rest of the first half remained scoreless with both teams playing good defensive lines. A try from the restart from Jake Balmforth left Letchworth standing, but fired them up to restart and attack theCheshuntdefence. A well scored try with some excellent passing put Letchworth up on the score board. With just a couple of minutes left to play Cheshunt once again upped their game and as Matthew Lawton went over the line to score his try the team looked like a force to be reckoned with. Final score 15-5. A 5 minute rest and a quick drink and the boys were off to take on Hemel B team. Fired up after the win the boys played some very cohesive rugby with some excellent driving moves from the forwards. Hemel put up a good fight but Conor McEvity once again showed speed and determination and scored. Both teams played well and kept the opposition pinned down. The rest of the first half and the first few minutes of the second half remained scoreless. A scrum just over the halfway line and Matthew Lawton took the ball and powered up the line, catching the Hemel defence completely off guard and giving him his first try of this match, second of the day. Final score 10-0. After their quick breakCheshuntA’s next game was against Letchworth A. With the boys all refreshed and up to match speed, they where straight out of the blocks with strong runs and big tackles. They keep Letchworth pinned back and Joe Sharp managed to score two tries, this inspired Iceman (Samuel Dervish) who got straight in there and scored a try. The boys all worked hard and was determined not to let Letchworth score a try with great tackles coming in from Alfie Stroud, James Anderson, Archie Stella and Archie Gurney and Jack and Oliver Staines to leave the final score 15-0. Next up for Cheshunt A was Hemel B and the boys really showed their class with McMc Obe scoring two tries both from his own half of the pitch and brushing aside several Hemel players in the process. The boys were now tackling anything that moved and when they had the ball made excellent ground. They where starting to move the ball around like the Ba Bas and there was no stopping them, with Joe Sharp scoring 3, Iceman (Samuel Dervish) 2 and Nicholas Dean and Samuel Gunkel a further 1 each. This lead to the final score of 45-0. Onto their third game of the morning Cheshunt B were setting up good play, but Letchworth B defended well with some excellent tackling. The power of the forwards and the quick footwork from Kenny Campbell proved too much for Letchworth he was straight over the line and opened up the scoring. The second half opened with a powerful run byCheshuntand a crunching defensive tackle from Letchworth, forcing a substitution. The game started again and in true Matthew Lawton style he nipped over the try line for his score of this match. A further 2 tries in the second half from Jake Balmforth and Kenny Campbell meant a final score line of 20-0. But the boys were showing signs of tiredness! In their 4th and final game Joe Crump and Freddie Brown played their first game forCheshunthaving filled in for Letchworth all morning. There was some excellent defensive play from Cheshunt but Hemel A were able to keep their composure and went over the line for the first score of the match. The restart saw some scrappy play from both sides, loss of control and silly mistakes. From an advantage point Hemel went over the try line to score once again leaving a score of 10-0 at half time. Disheartened by a poor first half Cheshunt tried to pick themselves up and fight on for the second half, but some inconsistent decision making and disjointed play left the defensive line weakened and Hemel once again went over the line. Final score line of 15:0 to Hemel. Last up forCheshuntA was Letchworth B which had Luke Soldano and George Dayton offering to play for the opposition to make up their numbers.Cheshuntwas in full flow now with the boys making strong runs and tackles they all wanted to get in on the act. Joe Sharp looked certain to score but for a try saving tackle from Luke Soldano his own team mate who was playing for Letchworth, who was proving a thorn in side of theCheshuntattack. Despite these efforts Iceman (Sam Dervish) managed to make some breaks and help himself to 5 tries and James Anderson also scored after all his hard work during games, the final score was 30-0 to Cheshunt. With excellent team spirit, some great defensive play, attacking lines and creativity across both teams and all players, the coaches decision was as tough as ever but Player of the day went to Luke Soldano. Unfortunaltey there was no Upper Clapton opposition on the day. By Lee LashmoreCheshunt Players; Sam Anderson, Zack Bowman, James Hayes, Dylon Hilton, Ben Lashmore, Daniel Smith, Nathan Doody Today saw two new players take the field for their debut games for Cheshunt, Daniel Smith and Nathan Doody. Match 1 – Cheshunt defended from the kick-off. The boys held their line well and kept pushing Bishops Stortford back. They got pretty close eventually to the Cheshunt try line, but some excellent tagging (I have to mention Ben Lashmore here who leapt like a salmon to take a tag) saw a turnover to Cheshunt. The boys moved well up the field exchanging passes, suddenly the ball was passed to Dylon Hilton by James Hayes and Dylon was gone, evading defenders weaving his way through and scoring a tremendous try. What a start, 1-0 to Cheshunt. The next attack saw another turnover by Cheshunt. During the next series of runs, we saw some exceptional ball handling and also tremendous support play by all of the boys, this passage of play led to James Hayes scoring a wonderful try (you would not believe it was their 1st game of the season), 2-0 Cheshunt. Bishops Stortford went on to score a try, but only after being pushed back up the field by our boys with more great tags, Score 2-1 Cheshunt. That Score appeared to make our boys more determined to win. From the restart the ball was played along the line, the boys making progress advancing up the field, another superb bit of play culminated with Zack Bowman scoring, weaving his way through the defence to score another excellent try. Score 3-1 Cheshunt. The restart by Bishops Stortford, was followed by another turnover by Cheshunt, the boys were on a roll and advanced towards the try line with Zack Bowman going on to score his 2nd try of the game. Score 4-1 Cheshunt, and half time. What a superb 1st half by the team. Before the start of the 2nd half a large intake of fluid was required…. The second half began but unlike the 1st half Bishops Stortford started quickly and scored (4-2). Cheshunt not to be outdone replied quickly through another lovely try by James Hayes, his 2nd of the game (score 5-2). The stand out try in the 2nd half for Cheshunt came from Ben Lashmore, who ran his way through the Stortford defence to score a wonderful try (6-2). Cheshunt in control of the game and looking to score a further try, Zack Bowman obliged scoring a hat-trick of tries also (8-4). Bishops Stortford went on to score their last try of the match. The ref blew the whistle to signify the end of the match. Both teams scoring 4 tries in the second half with Cheshunt winning the game 8-5 and playing against 8 players fielded by the opposition, well done Under 7’s, what a fantastic start to the new season. Match 2 – The boys were now going to play two fresh sets of 7’s from Stortford, Stortford would play a new 7 in the 1st half and a fresh set of 7’s in the 2nd half… the boys were going to be up against it now you felt. Cheshunt kept their discipline moving the ball and advancing up the field. Ben Lashmore picking the ball up on the right wing evading player after player to eventual score in the left hand corner, a great run from one side of the pitch to the other, score 2-1 Cheshunt. Stortford replied to bring the game back to all square at 2-2. The next try will be a try that one of our debutants will never forget, Nathan Doody with an excellent run, going on to score his very 1st try for Cheshunt, well done. The 2nd half began with play being pretty even, however with some excellent tagging by Cheshunt they managed to turn-over the ball… advancing towards the Stortford try line with the boys supporting the player in possession extremely well, the ball was released to Daniel Smith who went on to score his 1st try on debut. Well done Daniel, showing a lot of promise in his 1st match, score 4-2 Cheshunt. Stortford then scored a return try, 4-3 to Cheshunt Well, not wanting to be outdone and to ensure that he did not leave the field empty handed, Sam Anderson pressed forward, the heat not seeming to bother him, he was tagged, that did not deter the young boy, he was determined to score his try, he found his way back up behind his team mate, the ball was released to Sam and away he went, over the try to score. An important try as it kept daylight between us and Stortford, score 5-3 Cheshunt. Well done Sam, great determination. With the Game finely balanced and time running out we needed another try…. and we were not to be disappointed. Ben Lashmore after some fine ball handling by the entire team was there to get the ball over the line, scoring a hat-trick of tries too, score 6-4 Cheshunt. Stortford scored with hardly any time left on the clock to make the score 6-5 to Cheshunt. The ref blew the final whistle, what a game, final result 6-5 to Cheshunt. Well done to the entire team, who all played great today. What a way to start the 1st game of the season. A great comment also came from the Bishop Stortford coach, who said “your lads are a credit to Cheshunt Rugby Football Club and to rugby as a whole for playing in the heat without once complaining” By Nikki Dean
The sun was really starting to heat up now as the Quins took to the field and after a quick try put them 5 points down, the boys got stuck in. Joe Crump pulled one back and this left the score a 5-5 draw. The Wasps were then back on and there was some great play from Bishop Stortford, denying Cheshunt of 2 tries final score 15-10 to Cheshunt. Tries from Joe Sharp and James Anderson. The Quins kicked off there last game first and unfortunately the hot sun took its toll, final score 10-0 to Bishop Stortford. Once their game finished the whole squad was supporting the Saracens, there was some more fantastic rugby, James Smith scored 3 tries with one scored from a run nearly the full length of the pitch. There was another from Iceman (Samuel Dervish) and a further 4 tries from Jake Balmforth, final score 40-0. Excellent result, Come on you Green & Whites!!
