Cheshunt U9′s vs Hemel Hempstead 30th October 2011

Cheshunt U9’s squad seemed keen and eager for their match in warm up training, and they looked on form. Hemel looked disciplined and tight in their warm up and it looked like it was going to be a close run game. Letchworth looked lively and the triangular was set to begin with Joe Crump and Freddie Brown being excellent sportsmen and playing for Letchworth to make up their second team. TheCheshuntsquad was split into two teams A and B and the games began.

CheshuntA was first up against Hemel A and they started of slowly letting Hemel take the lead. This seemed to wake the boys up and some strong tackling from Samuel Gunkel 5 metres from the line lead to a turnover and Joe Sharp to run the length of the pitch and score. The well drilled team showed how well they can tackle and keep hold of the ball, which resulted in Mal Obe scoring and leaving us 10-5 up at half time. In the second half we made three substitutions and the new legs carried on the good work tackling any Hemel player with the ball, with the final whistle coming and a 10-5 win toCheshunt.

Cheshunt B team played Letchworth A first and within minutes Conor McEvity was over the line a good end result to some fluid passing and good support. The rest of the first half remained scoreless with both teams playing good defensive lines. A try from the restart from Jake Balmforth left Letchworth standing, but fired them up to restart and attack theCheshuntdefence. A well scored try with some excellent passing put Letchworth up on the score board. With just a couple of minutes left to play Cheshunt once again upped their game and as Matthew Lawton went over the line to score his try the team looked like a force to be reckoned with. Final score 15-5.

A 5 minute rest and a quick drink and the boys were off to take on Hemel B team. Fired up after the win the boys played some very cohesive rugby with some excellent driving moves from the forwards. Hemel put up a good fight but Conor McEvity once again showed speed and determination and scored. Both teams played well and kept the opposition pinned down. The rest of the first half and the first few minutes of the second half remained scoreless.  A scrum just over the halfway line and Matthew Lawton took the ball and powered up the line, catching the Hemel defence completely off guard and giving him his first try of this match, second of the day. Final score 10-0.

After their quick breakCheshuntA’s next game was against Letchworth A. With the boys all refreshed and up to match speed, they where straight out of the blocks with strong runs and big tackles. They keep Letchworth pinned back and Joe Sharp managed to score two tries, this inspired Iceman (Samuel Dervish) who got straight in there and scored a try. The boys all worked hard and was determined not to let Letchworth score a try with great tackles coming in from Alfie Stroud, James Anderson, Archie Stella and Archie Gurney and Jack and Oliver Staines to leave the final score 15-0.

Next up for Cheshunt A was Hemel B and the boys really showed their class with McMc Obe scoring two tries both from his own half of the pitch and brushing aside several Hemel players in the process. The boys were now tackling anything that moved and when they had the ball made excellent ground. They where starting to move the ball around like the Ba Bas and there was no stopping them, with Joe Sharp scoring 3, Iceman (Samuel Dervish) 2 and Nicholas Dean and Samuel Gunkel a further 1 each. This lead to the final score of 45-0.

Onto their third game of the morning Cheshunt B were setting up good play, but Letchworth B defended well with some excellent tackling. The power of the forwards and the quick footwork from Kenny Campbell proved too much for Letchworth he was straight over the line and opened up the scoring.  The second half opened with a powerful run byCheshuntand a crunching defensive tackle from Letchworth, forcing a substitution. The game started again and in true Matthew Lawton style he nipped over the try line for his score of this match. A further 2 tries in the second half from Jake Balmforth and Kenny Campbell meant a final score line of 20-0.

But the boys were showing signs of tiredness! In their 4th and final game Joe Crump and Freddie Brown played their first game forCheshunthaving filled in for Letchworth all morning. There was some excellent defensive play from Cheshunt but Hemel A were able to keep their composure and went over the line for the first score of the match. The restart saw some scrappy play from both sides, loss of control and silly mistakes. From an advantage point Hemel went over the try line to score once again leaving a score of 10-0 at half time. Disheartened by a poor first half Cheshunt tried to pick themselves up and fight on for the second half, but some inconsistent decision making and disjointed play left the defensive line weakened and Hemel once again went over the line.  Final score line of 15:0 to Hemel.

Last up forCheshuntA was Letchworth B which had Luke Soldano and George Dayton offering to play for the opposition to make up their numbers.Cheshuntwas in full flow now with the boys making strong runs and tackles they all wanted to get in on the act. Joe Sharp looked certain to score but for a try saving tackle from Luke Soldano his own team mate who was playing for Letchworth, who was proving a thorn in side of theCheshuntattack. Despite these efforts Iceman (Sam Dervish) managed to make some breaks and help himself to 5 tries and James Anderson also scored after all his hard work during games, the final score was 30-0 to Cheshunt.

With excellent team spirit, some great defensive play, attacking lines and creativity across both teams and all players, the coaches decision was as tough as ever but Player of the day went to Luke Soldano.

Cheshunt Under 9’s v Bishop Stortford – 2nd October 2011

By Nikki Dean

Well what a fantastic start to the season, this was the U9’s first contact matches and the got off to an amazing start. The U9’s were able to field 3 mixed sides, Saracens, Wasps and Quins.

Saracens and Wasps kick off simultaneously, with Saracens winning 25 -5 and Wasps 30-0 there was some excellent tries for Saracens from James Smith, and Matthew Lawton, with new boy Jake Balmforth scoring 3. In the Wasps team the tries came thick and fast from Jack Staines, Archie Stella, and Conor McEvity, in the second half Joe Sharp scored 2 tries on the trot, with a another came from Conor McEvity to round the game up.

The sun was really starting to heat up now as the Quins took to the field and after a quick try put them 5 points down, the boys got stuck in. Joe Crump pulled one back and this left the score a 5-5 draw. The Wasps were then back on and there was some great play from Bishop Stortford, denying Cheshunt of 2 tries final score 15-10 to Cheshunt. Tries from Joe Sharp and James Anderson.

The Quins kicked off there last game first and unfortunately the hot sun took its toll, final score 10-0 to Bishop Stortford. Once their game finished the whole squad was supporting the Saracens, there was some more fantastic rugby, James Smith scored 3 tries with one scored from a run nearly the full length of the pitch. There was another from Iceman (Samuel Dervish) and a further 4 tries from Jake Balmforth, final score 40-0.

Excellent result, Come on you Green & Whites!!

Cheshunt Under 9′s Back On Track

Cheshunt Under 9's

Sunday saw the Under 9’s get back on track in their games against Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead.  The strength in depth of the squad certainly showed and despite several of the team unable to make the day we still put out 2 sides, with both Hemel and Stevenage fielding one team each.  The 1st two games saw one team easily beat Stevenage with the other losing narrowly to Hemel.  Two further games then saw a convincing win against both Hemel (4 tries to 1) and Stevenage (9 tries to 0).

George Kingswell led the forwards with some excellent direct running, Jack Gunter also turned over some excellent ball with his work in the mauls.  James ‘The Tank’ Davis continued to make some excellent tackles with Teddy & Callum benefitting from the turn over ball with some excellent runs and tries.

At the end of the match the team received their medals and trophy from the Barnet Festival which they have now won 2 years in a row.
