Cheshunt 1st XV 21 – 11 Old Haberdashers 1st XV (By Piggsy)

On a sunny afternoon in front of  a decent crowd Cheshunt RFC opened their league campaign against Old Haberdashers, who were promoted last year.  Straight from the kick off Old haberdashers drove into the Cheshunt half and were awarded a penalty which they kicked to take an early 3 point lead.

Old Haberdashers continued to put Cheshunt under a lot of pressure and after some resolute defence the Old Haberdashers fly half was forced into an attempt at a drop goal. Cheshunt were slow to react as the ball bounced off the posts and into the Haberdashers wingers hands who ran in for a try which went unconverted for an 0 – 8 lead.

Cheshunt won the ball from the kick off and drove the ball into the Haberdashers 22 where they were awarded a penalty which was kicked by Tim Mcsherry to make the score 3 – 8.  The Haberdashers forwards continued to dominate at set pieces with Cheshunt on the back foot for a long period. Only last ditch defence kept Haberdashers from scoring. From the resulting 5 metre scum Old Haberdashers pushed the Cheshunt forwards over the line to score an easy try. Haberdashers missed the conversion to take an 3 – 13 lead.

With 5 minutes to go before half time Cheshunt started to play some open flowing rugby and mixed well between the forwards and backs to move the ball down towards Haberdashers line. Haberdashers again infringed to allow Mcsherry to slot the penalty to make it  6 – 13 at half time.

The second half started the way of the first with Haberdashers dominating the set pieces. They moved forward and scored in the 55th minute when the Haberdashers wing scored in the corner to make it 6 – 18 .  Cheshunt made 3 changes with Jason Pearce, Dean Gardener and Tom Mace coming off the bench. In the hot weather Old Haberdashers started to fade. Cheshunt defended well and started to dominate the loose play.

In the move of the match Cheshunt moved the ball down the right wing with Dean Gardener running 30m before getting tackled. The ball was recycled quickly and passed along the line to Dave Lever who easily beat his man to score in the corner. The conversion was missed to make the score 11-18 with 10 minutes to go.  Cheshunt again put the pressure on the Haberdashers line with no reward.  Haberdashers through their forwards again drove Cheshunt back towards their line. Once again they could not breach the Cheshunt defence. The Haberdashers Fly-half dropped a goal to make it 11-21.

Cheshunt again pushed at the Haberdashers line and when the final whistle went Haberdashers had deservedly won by 11 -21.

Cheshunt obviously need to work on a few areas but the defence and heart showed by the players will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season. Man of the match went to Dave Lever who scored Cheshunt’s only try but also showed he had learned to tackle during the summer.

Team.  O. Martinez, P.Barton, L. Chalk, S. Donnelly, G. Barton, D. Angell, A. Clarke, C. Jones, T. McSherry, G. Hayden, O.Amani R. Boulton, M. Corcoran(Captain), D Lever. Subs. D. Gardener, J. Pearce, T. Mace.

Cheshunt 2nd XV 40 – 10 Bishop’s Stortford 4th XV (By Batten)

A solid win for the 2nd XV at home on saturday built on a convincing pre-season that offers much promise for the forthcoming season. Saturdays team had an international flavour to it with the starting debuts of young ‘Hodgo’ at No.8 and the flame haired ‘Heinzy’ at inside centre. Saturday also saw the return to rugby of the perenially injured Jack Gutteridge and Scott Cummines, who both came through the game unscathed.

The day didn’t start too well when Aydan Duligall managed to pull his calf in the warm up after falling down a divot on the 2nd Team pitch.Cheshunt were slow in getting started against an experienced Stortford side who used all the tricks of the trade to disrupt the natural free flowing game that Cheshunt 2′s are known for. However, it didn’t take too long for for Cheshunt to get going and after some excellent pod work by the forwards ‘wiley old fox’ Jason Batten broke off of a maul and sprinted past the Stortford defence with great ease to then set up Tom Claridge who was ready and waiting on Batten’s shoulder. Reece Shoobridge stepped up with his reliable boot to put Cheshunt 7-0 up.

The second try followed a similar story with Jason Batten building on some excellent forward work to power his way through one Stortford defender and breeze past another before skillfully offloading to the supporting ‘Hodgo’ who ran clean through to score on his debut with Shoobridge duly converting to make the score 14-0. ‘Heinzy’ and his attacking runs soon paid dividends when he ran through the Stortford defence and drew in the remaining defence to set up the promising Jack Beckett to score. Shoobridge converted again and made it 21-0 to Cheshunt.

With Cheshunt’s backs now dominating the open pitch the creative Cheshunt were at their best and after some neat passing Jack Gutteridge showed he has gained some pace in his time off when he sprinted down the blindside wing past two Stortford players before setting up the supporting Tom Reynolds who pinned back his ears to run through and score with Shoobridge duly converting to make it 28-0.  A series of barnstorming runs was bound to take it’s toll, with the resulting tackles eventually forcing Linsell from the pitch just before half time with an injury to his ribs.

The second half started with Stortford making the most of their experience and playing downhill to score after a quick kick and run from their number 9 who got the best of a lucky bounce to score but failed to convert from what was an easy position to leave the score at 28-5. Cheshunt should have restored the gap after some good work to create space for Scott Cummines to run and draw the last defender but in amazement he managed to throw a weak forward pass to deny Charlie Porter from getting on the scoresheet.

Cheshunt soon restored the difference when Reece Shoobridge thrived on some stolen ball and ran blind to fool the Stortford defence before selling a brilliant dummy that saw the the opposition run off the pitch with a confused look on their face. He duly converted to bring the score to 35-5. The backs then exploited the gaps in defence when Heinzy threw a brilliant miss pass that fooled the defence to leave Charlie Porter to set up Aydan Duligall to power his way down the wing to carry on his impressive pre-season. Shoobridge missed the conversion after some suspect charging from Stortford. Stortford got a try back after a bobbling ball fooled Porter and he was tackled off of the ball but play was allowed to carry on and the conversion was duly missed to leave the final score on 40-10 to Cheshunt.

There were impressive perfromances from the two Aussies showing that they can plan rugby down there, old head Jason Batten showed his years of experience by being involved in every possible breakdown, Jack Beckett ran some impressive lines with pace and power and there was impressive tackling from young Archie Brixton and a rejuvenated Scott Cummines. Reece Shoobridge had another solid game at Scrum Half. However, man of the match had to go to a 17 year old debutant Ross Chamberlain who in his half hour on the pitch showed skill, power, strength and enthuisasm that any aspiring player should take note of! Chamberlain came on at flanker, not his normal position, and was always at the breakdown securing the ball, tackling the opposition or running through the opposition. After a very impressive 30 minutes it will be pleasing to see him soon get a full 80 minutes for the 2nd XV.

Team: Lewis, Lynn, Short, Linsell, Reynolds, Batten. Sr,Hounslow, Hodgo, Shoobridge, Claridge, Brixton, Heinzy, Beckett, Gutteridge, Porter, Spychal, Duligall. P, Duligall. A, Howard, Chamberlain, Wilcox, Cummines

Cheshunt 1st XV 45 – 0 Hackney 1st XV

A convincing win at home on Saturday gave the new coaching staff an opportunity to see the team playing some entertaining rugby in attack and some offer some resolute defending.

After just 3 minutes fly half Geoff Hayden cut through the defence on the 10 yard line, once in the 22 quick hands from Gary Barton and Tim McSharry gave Omid Amani the chance to cut back inside and open the scoring, McSharry’s conversion giving the Green and Whites an early 7-0 lead.

Most of the play was inside the visitors’ half and after 24 minutes, having been camped on the Hackney line for a while, Lee Chalk crashed over to extend the lead.  Hackney enjoyed their best period of the game leading up to half time, but the C’s defence held firm.  Although it should have been breached when the left winger dropped a pass with the line at his mercy.

The home side responded with a fine move up the pitch, Alex Clark just unable to get the ball down.  From the resulting scrum Hayden created some space for skipper Matt Corcoran to slice through with a lovely running line, McSharry’s extras gave C’s a 19-0 half time lead.

Early in the second half, winger Dave Lever was set free on the half way line, he touched down between the posts for an easy conversion.  Another Hayden break was supported by Tom Claridge, his pass found McSharry who wriggled over in the corner.

Amani soon secured his brace, following a 5 metre scrum, a move down the blind side allowed him to get over;another successful conversion had extended the lead to 38-0.

The biggest crowd pleaser though was left until last.  Amani breaking from inside his 22 and making 40 yards up the pitch and after several phases of recycled ball finally finding Gary Barton in open space; he drew the covering defence, threw an outlandish dummy and trotted over for the final try.

The team benefitted from rolling subs during the match, all given quality match time in preparation for this weekend’s opening league game against Old Haberdashers.

Team: Barton. P, Chalk, Girdlestone, Martines, Barton. G, Donnelly, Jones, Angell, Clark, Boulton. F, Minos, Hayden, Boulton R, Claridge, Corcoran, Lever, Amani, McSharry.

Cheshunt 2nd XV 66 – 7 Hackney 2nd XV

This needed loads of changes, I think Mr Batten needs to brush up on his grammar and spelling!!!

Saturday’s performance gave a lot of encouragement for the upcoming season.  Things started brilliantly witrh Graeme Howett opening scoring in the first few minutes.  Excellent work from the forwards helped create numerous scoring opportunities for the backs, including a Jonah Lomu-esque try from Ayden Duligall, giving the mighty Cheshunt a 47-0 score at half time.

Cheshunt carried on till the end racking up a final score of 66-7.  Jack Beckett, Josh Wilcox, Luke Starkey and James Linsell all starred by scoring 2 tries each but man of the match was 17 year old scrum half Reece Shoebridge, who played beyond his years with both the ball in hand and from the kicking tee.
