Not much rugby news this week as most of the fixtures have been cancelled.

There is an Irish Band and Disco on Saturday 8th January 2011 to raise money for the club.  Tickets will be £10 from behind the bar or online.  This is a whole club event, Seniors, Juniors & Minis, so please do your best to attend.

For a bit of fun, well for some of us anyway, during the break in the band’s set we will be auctioning off the tour virgin’s to their tour mentors/owners.  So if you want to see the likes of Mark Lennon, Tony Owen, Darren Masters, Dean Battams, Jack Jaggs, Spencer Linsell, Reece Shoobridge, Ben Burgess, Heinzy, Hodgo and Paul Duligall find out their fate then get yourself down to see them try and sell themselves to people who may be nice to them!  I’m sure a few scores will be settled here.

As an added incentive each age group or tourist that sells 10 tickets will receive 10% of the value as commission to the relevant cause.  You can also buy tickets online here, remember to enter where the commission is to go.

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA

Why not treat your loved one or this Christmas to some pampering in the comfort of your own home. Nothing will show you care more than giving them a Gift Voucher which they can then use to book a session whenever is convenient to them. Choose from a range of relaxing massages or beauty treatments.

To BUY your gift voucher simply contact Sue (VTCT qualified Holistic therapist) CLICK HERE to request voucher.

Make sure you say you are from Cheshunt Rugby Club when purchasing as the club will get a commission from sales.

Poker Fund Raising

If any age groups would like to raise money by organising a poker night then reply to this email.  The club now has 3 poker tables, cards and chips and can organise tournaments with up to 30 players.  It’s a very good way to make a load of money for your team.  We can do various tournaments and options or you can just book the equipment and organise your own evening.

There is a referee course that will be run at Hertford Rugby Club on 4 consectutive Mondays, 7:15pm to 9:45pm from 21st February 2011.

Cheshunt Rugby Newsletter

This Email, News & Events are available via the Website.

Follow us on Twitter, CheshuntRugby.

It looks like the new content on the website is working well and in the past month we’ve had 7500 page views.  I’ll try and get it completed in the next week but it goes to show that content is king compared to looks.  On that note we want as many teams as possible to submit match reports, preferably with a picture, to keep it fresh and up to date.  The reports will get spread out over the week so everyone gets a share of the front page.  Send any reports or other content to news@cheshuntrugby.co.uk please.

This newsletter now has over 240 subscribers and that is not including a good few of the junior and mini age groups, if the coordinators can send me a list of emails I can add them en masse alternatively people can individually subscribe from the front page of the web site.

The Club also made £20 during September from using the links in the Web Sponsors section of the site, unfortunately this was only from Me & Omid.  Please use them to buy anything you need and if there are any other retailers you want added just reply to this email and I’ll try and get them set up.

Can anyone who has paid subs make sure they’ve completed one of these registration forms and give it to your team captain.

There’s an important message from Bill Cooper below and then we’re onto the usual news.

Steve

Dear all,

For years, our mini & youth players were not allowed in the members bar between the hours of 12:00 – 2:00 on Sundays. We fought long & hard to get the ruling overturned which finally happened last November. The rules which WE set out with Rosedale are included in the statement below from Dave Murphy, Rosedale Secretary in Nov 2009:

‘Anyone may enter the members bar at any time of the week, providing they are accompanied by a parent/guardian/sister etc who is either a full paying section member or a bar member. However, we ask that no food is taken into the members bar and that all those entering will be showered and changed out of their kit. It goes without saying that they must be well behaved.

We would also ask that spectators etc ensure that their shoes/boots etc are as clear of mud as possible before entering. The main entrance door will remain unlocked at all times. However, the situation will be closely monitored to ensure the all the above is adhered to and the committee may, if justified, reverse the decision at any time’.

Unfortunately, some parents are completely ignoring these simple and obvious rules which is now causing a lot of upset and frustration and will inevitably lead to us all being prohibited from entry once again.

Thanks,

Bill Cooper

Junior Secretary

Cheshunt 1st XV 45 – 0 Hackney 1st XV

A convincing win at home on Saturday gave the new coaching staff an opportunity to see the team playing some entertaining rugby in attack and some offer some resolute defending.

After just 3 minutes fly half Geoff Hayden cut through the defence on the 10 yard line, once in the 22 quick hands from Gary Barton and Tim McSharry gave Omid Amani the chance to cut back inside and open the scoring, McSharry’s conversion giving the Green and Whites an early 7-0 lead.

Most of the play was inside the visitors’ half and after 24 minutes, having been camped on the Hackney line for a while, Lee Chalk crashed over to extend the lead.  Hackney enjoyed their best period of the game leading up to half time, but the C’s defence held firm.  Although it should have been breached when the left winger dropped a pass with the line at his mercy.

The home side responded with a fine move up the pitch, Alex Clark just unable to get the ball down.  From the resulting scrum Hayden created some space for skipper Matt Corcoran to slice through with a lovely running line, McSharry’s extras gave C’s a 19-0 half time lead.

Early in the second half, winger Dave Lever was set free on the half way line, he touched down between the posts for an easy conversion.  Another Hayden break was supported by Tom Claridge, his pass found McSharry who wriggled over in the corner.

Amani soon secured his brace, following a 5 metre scrum, a move down the blind side allowed him to get over;another successful conversion had extended the lead to 38-0.

The biggest crowd pleaser though was left until last.  Amani breaking from inside his 22 and making 40 yards up the pitch and after several phases of recycled ball finally finding Gary Barton in open space; he drew the covering defence, threw an outlandish dummy and trotted over for the final try.

The team benefitted from rolling subs during the match, all given quality match time in preparation for this weekend’s opening league game against Old Haberdashers.

Team: Barton. P, Chalk, Girdlestone, Martines, Barton. G, Donnelly, Jones, Angell, Clark, Boulton. F, Minos, Hayden, Boulton R, Claridge, Corcoran, Lever, Amani, McSharry.

Cheshunt 2nd XV 66 – 7 Hackney 2nd XV

This needed loads of changes, I think Mr Batten needs to brush up on his grammar and spelling!!!

Saturday’s performance gave a lot of encouragement for the upcoming season.  Things started brilliantly witrh Graeme Howett opening scoring in the first few minutes.  Excellent work from the forwards helped create numerous scoring opportunities for the backs, including a Jonah Lomu-esque try from Ayden Duligall, giving the mighty Cheshunt a 47-0 score at half time.

Cheshunt carried on till the end racking up a final score of 66-7.  Jack Beckett, Josh Wilcox, Luke Starkey and James Linsell all starred by scoring 2 tries each but man of the match was 17 year old scrum half Reece Shoebridge, who played beyond his years with both the ball in hand and from the kicking tee.
