Venue switch to Cheshunt Advantage

The parents, spectators and injured players were treated to a masterclass of rugby. It was a perfect day to play and with almost a full squad to pick from, the boys arrived early to warm up. Old Grammarians kicked off the game and we set the tempo straight away, the ball was cleanly caught, and passed like a hot potato straight down the line and out to Lui on the wing. He opened his legs, found the gap and powered over the line to score, James A converted decisively and it was game on. We quickly moved back for the restart and Old G’s kicked deep; Ollie caught the ball on his own try line and steamed forward, he cut through the whole Old G’s team to score a fantastic end to end try, most definitely the try of the day! No conversion but that boy was on fire! Spirits were high and finally after so much missed rugby the boys were unquestionably up for this game. Play was much improved and by keeping the ball alive and passing it both ways, this lead to Matt breaking the line and scoring, with James A converting once again. Restart again and the play was good, the forwards were not going to let the backs have all the glory and with a text book ruck the pack won the ball, Joe C picked it up and run straight down the blindside to score, try converted by James A. Old G’s did not lose their spirit and continued to play hard, coming at us with a well-deserved try just before half time, which they converted. However, Cheshunt were just a much stronger team , and from the beginning of the second half there was some excellent team play, the ball was passed out down the line to Lui who ran in a quick try, his sixth try in three games, conversion once again by James A. Play continued and was fast, not to be out done by the backs, prop Mal then showed what a strong forward he is, scooping up the ball and powering over the line, his twin brother McMc cheering him on from the side line. This time the conversion was not made. Another quick start saw some lovely rucking and Matt nip in another cheeky try which was converted by Aston. The game continued and scrum half Matt was determined to make his mark, with some great teamwork scored 3 more tries, 2 converted by Aston. Just before the end of the game a slight slip in concentration, and a fumbling of the ball, let O G’s take advantage and score their second try, which they then converted. The final score of the game 62 – 14.

After a ten minute break we started the second game, there was a few changes in our player line up but this had not deterred the Cheshunt team. The team continued as they had started, keeping the ball alive, making strong tackles and working together. There were strong runs from Christian, Billy, Kenny, Cameron and James Smith, gaining ground and pushing the team forward, whilst Thomas, Eoin, and Nicholas continued to constantly cause trouble for the opposite in close. After a lovely little pass from Christian, Nicholas was caught with the ball, he hung on and persistence paid off, he broke free and powered forward to smash the ball over the line, with a nice conversion from Aston to finish. Back for the restart and the boys were working hard, a few moments later Nicholas was back in the thick of it grappling for the ball, he makes a break for it and scores he second try of the day, with Billy converting. Old G’s kick the restart and after a 3 way clash of heads with James Smith, Nicholas, and the opposition, the boys failed to clear their line, gifting OG’s the ball which they used to their full advantage, scored and convert. The boys re-focus getting their game back, using the line they pop the ball out to Conor whose great pace puts him easily over the line, and Aston converts. The last try of the game comes from a beautiful run from Lui, once he has the ball he drops it down a gear and flies over the line, again Aston converts. The final score 28 – 7.
Congratulations to the home team, an excellent day of rugby!!!
