Last Game of the Season

It was a great day of rugby played in the true spirit of the game and a joy to be watch by the spectators.

Last game of the season for the U13s was an away friendly against Division 1 team Harpenden. It was an early kick off and several boys were missing due to St George’s Day Parades, with only 14 players 30 minutes before kick-off, we were expecting a very tough game. However a few late arrivals increased our numbers and we managed a full team with a couple of subs.
We took to the field and Harpenden kicked off, the ball was picked up by Cheshunt who ran straight back at Harpenden. A quick pass to Cameron saw him run straight through several players and score the first try in his debut game. It was quiet windy so the tricky conversion was missed. The whole team was fired up and from the restart they went straight back up field and after some great play from both backs and forwards the ball worked its way to Lui. Showing his power and pace Lui opened his legs with some great handoff’s he manage to shoot down the wing and score, another hard conversion missed.
The boys were playing as a team and working together, morale was high and there was no stopping them. Harpenden dug deep and were attacking hard and when they kicked over to Full Back Ollie, he had it covered, he cleanly caught the ball and ran straight back at them. The ball went to ground and Cameron cleared out two Harpenden players at the ruck which allowed Matt to pick up the ball, round several players and score a great try, the wind still causing a problem conversion missed.
Harpenden never dropping their heads, rallied their team and attacked the Cheshunt line, with some great play and strong rucking they crossed the line and converted. Following so more determined play and a break on the wing Harpenden scored another try, conversion missed but it was GAME ON!. With half time fast approaching both teams were playing well, Cheshunt were again on the attack, just before the Harpenden line, but after several recycled runs at the line the ball was knocked on and Harpenden kicked the ball out. Half time score 15 -12
At the restart Nicholas and Lui were replaced by Kenny and Conor. This meant a change in the line-up with Ross moved to flanker and Ollie into centre. Despite the changes the boys really wanted to end the season on a high and after some good outside runs from Joe S, Joe B and Conor, Matt got the ball to Cameron who ran in his second try right under the posts which James converted. Lui returned to the pitch in replace of Ollie and straight away linked up with Conor and Ross. After some great offloading Lui with work still to do ran in his second, conversion missed.
Harpenden came back us strongly, rucking well and recycling the ball they crashed over the line, but the fire in Cheshunt was roaring and Jack and Cameron sprinted at the conversion charging the ball down so the was no points scored. The whole team now were playing the best rugby they had played all season, moving the ball up field with nearly all the team getting a hand on it. There was a breakdown and they won the penalty just near the Harpenden line. Matt took the penalty popped it down the line to Ross who running at great pace cut straight through the Harpenden defence to score and James converted with the last kick of the game. Final score 34 – 17
It was a great day of rugby played in the true spirit of the game and a joy to be watch by the spectators.
