Cheshunt 45 Barnet Elizabethans 5

Cheshunt started the new season with an emphatic victory over old rivals Barnet Elizabethans, dominating all aspects of play and scoring seven tries in the process. Kicking up hill in the first half, they soon had Barnet pinned back in their 22, unable to cope with the quick ball the Cheshunt forwards were providing, the defensive line was soon undone, Dave Lever from 30 metres out with no cover was allowed to easily run in under the posts. Although Barnet rarely strayed into the Cheshunt half, the home team were
to add to their tally until the half hour mark. Debutants Scott Glynn and Mike Henderson combined to create the break, Lever beat a couple of defenders before passing back inside to Joel Bailey, he rounded the last man and made another easy conversion for Reece Shoobridge, to move C’s to 14-0. Two more quick tries before half time made the game safe, after a mix up in mid field, Alex Clark tidied up and got behind the defence, Dave Angell was on hand to link up with Bailey who was in for his brace. Just before the break, Barnet desperately trying to clear their lines sent a long kick deep into the Cheshunt half, it was fielded by Adam Chantler, after good work from Clark and Ben Hounslow, the ball was soon with Louis Mulholland, he too was able to get behind the posts for another Shoobridge conversion and a comfortable 26-0 advantage at the break. Barnet almost immediately reduced the margin at the start of the second half, they scored a try and they were unlucky with the conversion, as it hit the post, they rarely threatened again and Cheshunt, without completely running away with the game, will be pleased with the control they had at the scrum and the break down, Mulholland and Shoobridge at half back had plenty of time to set up attacks and work Cheshunt down field. Cheshunt started to add to their total with a nicely worked try, Mulholland took a quick free kick, Clark, Glynn and Declan Walker made ground into the 22, more quick ball from the ruck, was taken further forward by man of the match, Henderson, then back along the line to Lever who notched his brace when he beat the last two defenders, the Green and Whites had stretched away to 31-5. Another crowd pleasing try followed, ball along the line was passed back inside to full back Chantler, he burst through the tackle of the last defender and touched down. Chantler was immediately back on the score sheet, after Glynn had put him in space, he used Walker as a dummy runner and cut back inside to get over again, under the posts, the third player to get a brace. With several players still missing, Cheshunt will look forward to a successful campaign at both first and second team level. The first team have a tricky league opener, away at Old Actonians, whilst the second entertain Harrow at Andrews Lane.
