for this reason, this was not a game to take lightly and it proved to be a reasonable test for the green and whites.
Cheshunt were looking to improve on the most recent win against Old Albanian’s (24 – 22) and establish the pattern of play that they hope will see them top Division Two in the coming weeks. Unfortunately though it was the conditions which largely dictated play on the day. Bitterly cold, windy with occasional snow flurries and a wet-muddy pitch meant much of the game was dictated by spilt ball. To be fair neither side really got going.
Cheshunt managed the only score of the first half with a nice blind-side switch by fly-half, Scott Glynn, from a scrum twenty five metres out. A dummy pass to winger, Cameron Frazer, wrong-footed the cover defence and Scott was in under the posts. The Cheshunt second came early in the second half from a ruck-turnover mid-pitch. Quick-hands from scrum-half, Dan Cansick, and Scott Glynn was able to break the gain-line before finding centre, Scott Drew, with a crisp pass. A bit of ball juggling ensued (he assured us afterwards that was just for excitement) before the Tank showed enough pace to shake off the cover defence and score under the posts. It was another straightforward kick for flanker, Will Payne (2 from 2), and Cheshunt was looking good for the game.
Letchworth did manage to rally through the forwards and, with Cheshunt down to thirteen, they were able to achieve greater penetration over the last fifteen minutes or so. The Cheshunt defence was however resolute with the player shortfall serving only to make the remaining players more determined to keep Letchworth out.
There were notably strong performances from back-rowers, Mike Henderson, Will Payne and Jack Berry, and outside halves, Scott Glynn and Daniel Cansick, who all put in big tackles at key stages of the game - a good job guys, in difficult conditions, well done.
